ITS Updates

A new school year brings new updates from ITS, including wireless tech, Blackboard updates, and more!

New Wireless Technology for Students, Faculty, and Staff Update

Starting mid-May, we began the migration of the new Cisco wireless technology.  We have posted a general schedule for the building on our website. In addition to also posting signs and handouts in key locations.

Users connecting to wireless in the buildings or specific locations that have migrated will see the network information below:

  • Pace_Connect will now be called PACE-OPEN
  • Pace_Secure will now be called PACE-WIRELESS

Important Note: It is strongly recommended that all users connecting to the new wireless network register their devices in order to receive proper permissions and network functionality. This is done by following the steps when connecting to PACE-OPEN.

For additional updates, information, and/or rollout schedules for the new services, please visit the following site: Configuring Wireless.

Blackboard Collaborate Notice for Student and Faculty Mac Users

Recent security changes released by Apple may prevent Web conferencing customers from launching Blackboard Collaborate sessions and recordings. Customers using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 will be affected.  The security changes no longer allow for users to auto-launch JNLP files. The Blackboard Collaborate Support Team has released several workarounds for these users on the Blackboard Collaborate Support site. If you need additional assistance, please contact Beth Gordon Klingner (bklingner@pace.edu) or Samantha Egan (segan@pace.edu).

New Wireless Technology for Students, Faculty, and Staff Update
Starting mid-May, we will begin the migration of the new Cisco wireless technology at One Pace Plaza building (with the exception of Maria’s Tower). We will be posting a general schedule for the building on our website. In addition, we will also be posting signage and have handouts in key locations.

If you are connecting to wireless in the buildings or specific locations list above, you will see the network information below:

  • Pace_Connect will now be called PACE-OPEN
  • Pace_Secure will now be called PACE-WIRELESS

Microsoft Lync Settings Update
In order to improve the user experience when scheduling and conducting Lync online meetings and the Web conferences, we have updated the Microsoft Lync’s default settings. For a video tutorial on customizing meeting options, click here.

In addition, a new “Lync Delegate” feature has been enabled which will allow a designated person to set up a Lync meeting on behalf of someone else.  To learn how Lync delegate access works, you can review tutorials here.

Another benefit of enabling Lync Delegate access is that it will also turn on the Lync “voice calling” feature.  This means that calls to internal Pace numbers/extensions can now be made via the dial pad icon on the main Lync window.  Just type in the number or extension of the person you want to call and press CALLNote: To use this feature, you must have either a microphone or speaker connected to your computer or a microphone enabled headset.

Exchange Upgrades
While the upgrade is in progress, users may see references to emailnyc.pace.edu or emailwst.pace.edu in their mail clients. Some mail clients may require configuration changes to continue to function. Please review the table on the following site Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 Upgrade and take note of any changes required for the mail client you use.

Once the upgrade to Exchange Server 2013 is complete this summer, emailnyc.pace.edu and emailwst.pace.edu will no longer be required and all users will be able to use email.pace.edu again.

Blackboard Upgrade in May
Blackboard Learn servers will be taken offline on Thursday, May 23, from 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in order to install a service pack upgrade. The update will provide a number of enhancements to the Blackboard Learning Management System. Postini Service Changes for Faculty, Staff, and Students
This past March we migrated our services from Postini to Exchange Online Protection (EOP) which affected all users.  Quarantine summaries will now be coming from the following sender: quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com.  The new email anti-spam and virus filtering service is much more aggressive where it blocks spam before even reaching your quarantine mailbox so you may see a decrease in the quantity of messages in your daily summaries.

For more details on this transition, visit the following sites: SPAM Control: Postini Transitioning to Exchange Online Protection and SPAM Control: Exchange Online Protection (EOP) FAQs. For information on how to deal with spam, refer to the following page: Spam Alerts.

Read what’s happening in ITS this month, including their Strategic Technology and Information Security plans, a Microsoft Lync feature making it easier to dial in to conference calls, and more.

ITS Developments
ITS has been working diligently over the course of the past few months on creating a Strategic Technology Plan for the department. This plan can now be viewed online through the CIO Updates channel within the Staff and Faculty tabs in your MyPace Portal account. The plan outlines our philosophy, mission, and long-term goals over the next few years. In addition, as information security becomes increasingly more critical and necessary, the department has
initiated an Information Security Advisory Committee that has representatives from various areas. This committee has drafted an Information Security Plan that will be distributed and implemented across the campuses to ensure Pace University is doing our best to keep our assets and data secure.  Keep an eye for more information to follow!

Lync Dial In Conference Coming Soon
ITS is thrilled to announce a new service for all Pace staff and faculty as part of Pace’s Microsoft Lync Server 2010 deployment! Microsoft Lync has provided instant messaging, presence, and audio/video/web conferencing from your Windows or Mac computer. This new service now includes the capability of joining a conference from any on-campus (dial **8) or off-campus phone (call 914-597-8500)! External callers will not need to call the operators in order to be transferred into a meeting that is set up using Microsoft Lync like you do with internal conference calls (**6) that are currently set up through Pace’s Alcatel Phone
system. In addition, this feature does not require payment for usage like the Genesys Conferencing system. We will be deploying the service in stages over the course of the next few weeks.

ePortfolio Contest Winners
We are proud to announce that Carly Steet, Ashley Dandridge, Kiersten Albrecht, Michelle Liew, and Jennifer Ross are this season’s ePortfolio contest winners! With so many magnificent entrants it was difficult to choose just one winner from each campus…so we chose three from Pleasantville and two from New York City. Our winners received gift cards and an ePortfolio Certificate of Excellence. To learn more, check out the ePortfolio blog and look for their pages on ePortfolio.

A Message from Pace’s New CIO Thomas Hull:
It is great to be here as the CIO of Pace University. We are the Information Technology Services (ITS) group that handles all of the computers and systems on campus. I joined Pace after 28 years in the IT industry including being CIO at Siena College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, Visions FCU, Cornell, and IBM. We are proud of the work that we do at Pace ITS and strive to help students and faculty with using computers, wireless networking, and the software applications around campus and from the Internet. Below we have outlined some “highlight” areas of recent enhancements and services that are available to everyone. We want to have the best technology services of any university and if you have any questions or comments, please let us know.

We have extended our ITS Help Desk hours to 8:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. weekdays and 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on weekends for the first two weeks of September. Please visit our website for details: http://www.pace.edu/its.

Enhancements to OSA Phone Systems
A new system was installed which allows incoming calls to the new OSA call center to be queued instead of going to voice mail during busy periods.

Web Conferencing Tools
There are many products available providing web conferencing tools. Over the past few months ITS has been evaluating the various options and working to develop our recommendations for the best tools for Pace University needs.

ePortfolio Updates
The ePortfolio Program has expanded its roots this summer in various areas, including freshman orientation, UNV101, and tenure and promotion (TAP).

New Digital Signage Vendor: ORCA
ITS worked with Marketing and Communications to bring in our new vendor for digital signage –ORCA. All content is now managed, deployed, and distributed through them for the New York City Campus. The signage provides a platform for advertising various news, events and announcements to the Pace community at key locations around the campus.

New Wireless Network for Pace

Effective June 27, all wireless users must switch to the Pace_Secure network. Learn more about the transfer.

All wireless users must now use the Pace_Secure wireless network. The PWN and Pace_Guest wireless networks will no longer be accessible.  Visitors to Pace who do not have a University assigned MyPace Portal account and password can obtain wireless internet access by creating a guest account through their Pace sponsor (Sponsors must be a Pace faculty, staff, or student).  This account will be used to connect to the Pace_Secure wireless network.

What do I need to do if my machine is already configured for Pace_Secure or I have a Pace-owned machine on the Pace domain?

Nothing! You should be able to connect to the wireless network without making any configuration changes to your device.

How can I connect to the Pace_Secure wireless network?

Simply configure your wireless device to connect to the Pace_Connect.  Follow the instructions to load XpressConnect.  XpressConnect automatically configures your wireless device (laptop, iPad, Smartphone) for the Pace_Secure wireless network.

Important Notes:

  • XpressConnect works with Windows (XP, Vista and 7), Mac (Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, and iPhone), Ubunto, and Android devices (except original Androids which are not compatible with the Pace wireless network).
  • Running  XpressConnect is a one-time process. Once completed your device is configured to connect to Pace_Secure.
  • If using an Apple product, once you are connected to Pace_Secure, you should go into your wireless settings and “Forget” all previous Pace networks on your device such as: PWN, Pace_Guest, and Pace_Connect.

    2. Learning to use an iPad

    4. Video Conferencing
Using state of the art video conferencing technology, Pace was able to connect to members in Darfur through United Nations and Movi Video Conferencing.  Students from Law 602A–Externship Environmental Diplomacy Practice were able to speak with Ambassador Robert Van Lierop, member of the UNAMID Advisory Board on Justice, Accountability, Truth and Reconciliation.
    5. Mobile Beta Webpage
If you haven’t heard of our recent development of Pace University’s Mobile Beta Webpage, take a second to check it out! You can access this webpage on the web or on your web-enabled mobile device.  Go to http://m.pace.edu and check it out.
