Employee Relations Manager Anna Vidiaev ’01, ’11, shares her experience at an annual HR Conference and reminds us how Pace’s HR initiatives are succeeding.

What a great opportunity to show Pace University’s presence at the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) Annual Conference which took place in Boston, September 9-11. It was a chance to meet human resources professionals and benchmark the range and innovation of current programs and services offered by Pace University’s Division of Human Resources (Pace HR).

Pace HR has been actively involved in the association, both as attendees and presenters at recent regional and national meetings. Most notably, Robert Lazer, PhD, director of Organizational Learning and Development was elected as the President-Elect for the CUPA-HR New York Metro Chapter Board of Directors, beginning July 1, 2012. Pace HR’s regular attendance at the Eastern Region seminars has been helpful for professional development and networking opportunities, ensuring that our programs and services are up to par.

It was my first time attending the annual conference. This year’s message of Revolutionary Action: Engage, Lead, and Transform was prevalent in the number of insightful key note speeches and highlights during more than 70 concurrent sessions and other workshops. Attendees represented all 50 US states and 10 countries.

What did I learn? Well, first, there were many workshops from which to choose. One of the most memorable was Comedy as Catalyst showcasing the “Black-Jew Dialogues” and how one university used the show to develop a program that recognizes the diversity of human experience with ongoing dialogue. Another surprising highlight was the interactive nature of the 10 Most Important Higher Ed Labor and Employment Cases of 2012 which tested our knowledge by judging the decision of each case based on the facts. Further, a workshop on talent management focused on the implementation of robust performance management systems, while another examined the interconnection between diversity management and employee engagement.

My notebook was full of bullet points and suggestions to create new programs or improve existing ones here at Pace.

Most importantly, it was an opportunity for reflection on the variety of existing programs that various departments within Pace HR offer or facilitate for students, faculty, and staff:

  • New Hire Follow Up: If you are a recent hire, either you heard from Employee Relations or will soon be contacted for a New Hire Follow Up conversation.
  • BBB@Pace: Does the Brown Bag Break @ Pace sound familiar? Pace HR has been reaching out to staff throughout the University organizing informal discussions on motivations and inspirations in the workplace.
  • YES Recognition: Did you receive or submit a Your Excellence Shows (YES) Nomination recently? Recognition programs are an important way to show the value of each and every staff member and student worker.
  • Talent Management: Calling all supervisors! Managing Successfully at Pace provides training to Pace University managers giving them the necessary references for and knowledge of the University policies and procedures.
  • Diversity: Don’t forget to nominate a staff, student, or faculty member, including yourself, for the Diversity Leadership Award this year. Also, inquire about the Courageous Conversations in Diversity Training.
  • Staff Development: Watch for announcements of this year’s training offerings and check the OL&D registration system for the training and development calendar.

As I was settling into my seat on the train, heading home to New York City from Boston’s Back Bay Station, I smiled. It was a most educational and nice way to spend almost three full days amidst the beautiful September weather. Perhaps, I will come back to visit this “big city with small town feel” they call Boston and explore more of its festivities.
